Matt Giordano – Aligment based yoga, Vinyasa, Aikido, Tae Kwan Do, Acrobatics, AcroYoga and Thai Yoga Massage
Matt spent seven years developing his teaching style living in Manhattan, where he taught at local studios (Pure NYC, Equinox). Matt now travels internationally to teach his signature technique based style of yoga, educating yoga students on how to use their body in a profound and life changing way. Well-known for his ability to guide students deeply into postures with his refined attention to detail and precise action cues, Giordano is an adept guide for all-levels students at festivals, workshops and in his weekly studio classes.
His study of biomechanics and integrative mind-body techniques informs his teaching, as he draws upon wisdom from traditions of yoga, martial arts (Aikido and Tae Kwan Do), acrobatics, AcroYoga and Thai Yoga Massage. In the end, Matt inspires a humble confidence, allowing students to find ease while expanding the edge of their comfort zones.
What’s your story? For 8 Years I toured as a guitarist/musician in a rock band. While it was an amazing experience, tour life was challenging. Long days driving through traffic, sleeping in a van, often eating terrible food, along with the massive highs and lows led me to looking for another way. I started studying myself: my reactions, emotional triggers, mood swings and so on. I struggled to meditate with very little knowledge of the practice. I was reading books to try and help find peace of mind, one of which was Wisdom of The Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. Within the first few pages Millman recommended Yoga as a moving meditation. I started my practice the next day and immediately fell in love with every part of it: Breath work, physical strength, spiritual talks, meditation and so on. I practiced every chance I could, and my dedication sparked the interest of my friends. They wanted to get involved but intimidated by the idea of going to a studio. I agreed to teach them. It started with six friends in my mothers basement. The following week it was ten. The following week it was two classes at fifteen people each, then three a week at thirty people. It was literally the most rapid expansion I have ever experienced in my life. After a summer of teaching in my mothers basement I was being invited to teach all around Long Island and even got hired at Pure Yoga in Manhattan. Upon getting hired at Pure Yoga, I was asked about where I did my training. I had to admit that I never did a formal training, I had simply learned everything I knew from my step mother, The Anusara Teacher Training Manual, and tons of DVD’s. Pure put me through their training and my professional career as a yoga teacher began there in NYC.
Yoga is… Self Awareness. Awareness of our body, thoughts, and the energy that pulses through everything. Yoga to me is the study of Nature, and we are a small aspect of Nature.
Words of wisdom… The purpose of your life is simple: to learn how to completely enjoy it, all of it. Practice anything that brings you a greater understanding of you, and helps you learn how to deal with everything that stands in your way of enjoying the short time we have in this body.
What is one fact that most other people wouldn’t know about you? I grew up playing Hockey, and I still play now whenever I am home from tour.
